Having spent most of my life assisting people, businesses and other not for profit organisation in paid and unpaid capacities it was an easy decision to join the Board at Kids West, a long standing and respected registered charity to ensure that the outstanding work that has been carried out over the past 20 years by Trevor Oldfield and the team continues long into the future.
I am a passionate accountant and I am part of the new breed of modern accountants who ‘get’ technology. The technological changes that have disrupted our industry have provided businesses and not for profit organisations like Kids West with an opportunity to implement efficient and transparent accounting and reporting systems to ensure all stakeholders expectations are met.
Having moved to Xero and associated reporting Add-Ons in 2012 Kids West has been able to reduce significantly expenditure on accounting, bookkeeping and auditing services as well as provide more concise and timely reporting to its board members and stakeholders.
I have over 15 years’ experience in public practice and I am the Head of Accounting at Xero and also a director of Aptus Accounting & Advisory. I present regularly on a range of topics from cloud solutions to superannuation changes and everything in between. I am a mentor and guest lecturer at Macquarie University for under-graduate students and also mentor business owners and managers. I have specific expertise in business structuring, asset protection, succession planning, IT & cloud solutions and internal systems & controls.
I hold a Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting degree, Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting and Diploma of Financial Services. I am a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser, Xero Certified Adviser & Gold Partner, Registered Tax Agent, an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited, a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Justice of the Peace.
As well as Kids West I am a Life Member & Treasurer of the Redbacks Football Club. I sit on the Executive Committee of the Sydney High School Old Boys Union and give freely of my time to a number of smaller not for profit organisations as their honorary auditor. In the past I have also held the position of Treasurer for the Sydney High School Foundation Ltd and the Sydney High School Old Boys Union.
I also find the time to engage in personal sporting punishments, likes the 2013 City2Surf where the EFS Strategic team and I raised $12,000 for Kids West and in 2011 I raised $13,000 for the MS Society by completing the grueling 90KM Sydney to the Gong bike ride !
I’m always ready to provide commentary on the state of the accounting industry and life in general and share my views via my blog at www.jamessolomons.com
